'A happy new year' for online poker fans

Absolute Poker has released its 2007 Bad Beat Jackpot figures, giving online poker fans a new reason to celebrate the new year.

The company reports that it has handed over more than $6.5 million (£3.2 million) to Bad Beat Jackpot players since the launch of the game in June last year.

Absolute Poker enjoyed a successful 2007 with its Bad Beat Jackpot online poker game and the website's Bad Beat August Jackpot of $821,670.69 smashed all industry records, including the previous largest Bad Beat Jackpot record of $739,621, held by PartyPoker.com.

Bad Beat Jackpot is played in a similar way to regular Texas hold 'em poker but any player holding four 8s or better while losing a hand wins a portion of the jackpot.

David Clainer, Absolute Poker senior vice president, said: "2007 was an extremely profitable year for our Bad Beat Jackpot players. In just six months, we introduced the Bad Beat Jackpot game to US players, handed out over $6.5 million in Bad Beat Jackpot winnings, and broke an industry record."

Absolute Poker is an online poker room, based in Miami, Florida, that offers players real-money games against other players, fair, secure and honest games, and a variety of payment options.
