Every year there are cosplay conventions, and almost every costume comes with its own set of weapons. Ninjas, samurai, blade wielders, and gun totters are all popular characters in anime and manga. In this article, we’ll discuss the various places you can go to get the hook up for your cosplay weapons needs.
Making them yourself is the obvious answer for many people. The standard construction materials are cardboard or wood and markers or paint. If you’ve got a picture to follow, it’s pretty easy to carve or cut out the shapes of most standard weapons and then paint over them. Depending on the materials used, these types of home made weapons can be very flimsy. And God help you if it rains and you’re stuck outside. It’s not hard for a cardboard sword to turn into a pile or colorful dripping mush.
Your next option is to find a sword shop. Most malls have one, and the prices are mall prices. Most of the time, these are high quality, retail clean polished weapons. Most of the time they are made out of real metal. Sometimes you can find wooden ones. While using real metal would obviously be the coolest way to go, 99.9% of conventions will not allow you to bring a real weapon. That’s okay though, because the price of these retail weapons would probably kill you before the actual weapon itself.
Your final option would be to jump into the year 2010 and buy your cosplay weapon online. Thanks to the internet, there are dozens of retailers and wholesalers now at your fingertips offering you reasonable prices for all of your cosplay needs. Shipping and handling might be a little steep, but it would still likely be cheaper than the retail prices you’d find at traditional brick and mortar stores. Plus, you’ll have a much wider choice of convention friendly weapons to choose from.
The way to go for you might seem obvious, though there really is no right answer. If you’re low on budget, the obvious choice would be to make your own weapon. If you have money to spare and have something specific in mind, you should use the internet to find your weapon. And if you just have the money to throw away, you might want to try the mall. Or, perhaps you don’t have a place for the item to be delivered, or you don’t own the internet to where you couldn’t place an order yourself, in that case you’d probably also go with option A or B. Whatever way you choose, the important thing is to get your cosplay weapon and complete your costume.
