Vertical bandsaws, are very safe tools to use, without abiding by a few sensible but basic rules they can still be very dangerous woodworking tools to work with.
The first thing is to make sure you are always wearing a pair of safety glasses or goggles. A vertical band saw blade moves at great speed and even the smallest piece of waste or debris will be traveling at high velocity and they are thrown out in all directions. It is just as important to protect your eyes during a small quick job as it is a larger piece of work. Never risk life long damage to your eyes.
If your blade breaks then there will be a lot of lethal metal in the air. Do not ever risk eye damage, make it a habit to always were your protective eye wear. And no, your prescription spectacles do not provide any protection at all.
Wear appropriate clothing while using your vertical band saw. This rule applies when you are using any machine tool, whether they are for woodworking, metalworking or hedge trimming. Avoid wearing anything that can get caught up in the band saw blade or tangled in your work. Use common sense, no long jewellery, flowing scarves or neck ties.
Always do a quick check of your machine before you turn it on. A band saw has many wheels, blocks and guides that need to be in the right place for whatever work that you are starting. Check them on a regular basis for signs of wear and tear and replace if needed. When in doubt give your supplier a call, or try visiting their website if you have lost the instructions that came with your purchase.
Remember it is always better to be safe rather than sorry when using any machinery.
