Dell Inc. is US based multinational company established in 1984 by Michael Dell that develops, manufactures, sells and supports personal computers and other computer-related products. The company basically deals with personal computers, servers, data storage devices, network switches, software, computer peripherals and televisions. Positioned at number two after HP, the company is in operation from a long time and employs more than 88,000 people worldwide.
Some of the latest products launched by Dell in the market are Power Edge T100( server), PowerEdge M805 and M905 blades ( blade servers), Dell Inspiron mini 9 laptop (Mini laptop), Dell PowerConnect 2216, Dell PowerConnect 2224 etc.
The first computer designed by Dell was produced in 1985 which was an Intel 8088 compatible processor running at a speed of 8 MHz. It was sold in US $795. To the surprise of the customers, the company crossed more than $73 million in its first year. At that time, the company was learning to crawl in electronics market, but soon it learn to run and up to 1988, Dell’s capital grew to $80 million from its initial public offering. Dell became a prominent member of world’s 500 largest companies catalog by 1992. In 1996, Dell began selling computers via its own web site.
In 1999, Dell became the largest seller of PC in US with $25 billion revenue. In the next year, Dell prove its existence in the area of multimedia and home entertainment by introducing televisions, printers, handhelds, and digital audio players. In July, 2004 Michael Dell stepped aside as Chief Executive Officer while retaining his position as Chairman of the Board.
Another milestone for Dell was February 2005, when Dell was crowned with the caption "Most Admired Companies" by one of the leading magazine of the time. In 2006, Dell purchased the computer hardware manufacturer Alienware, which is an American computer hardware company, the new subsidiary maintained its autonomy in terms of design and marketing of hardware products. These were the golden years when company created a boom in the electronic world. According to statistical reports issued on March 1, 2007, the company’s shows an earning report of $14.4 billion. Dell’s retail business has been a remarkable success during the first quarter of 2008.
Dell was rising at marvelous swift in India. As per the market reports, it posted Rs. 3,500 crore in topline in 2007 compared to Rs.1, 800 crore in 2006. Even, the company is doing better this year. The PC market shows a growth of 7.2 percent from 4.2 percent with respect to last years growth. Slowly, Dell is stealing the market share occupied by other companies like HP, Acer, and Lenovo. Recently, the company has introduced two blade servers.
Concluding it can be said that Dell has marked noteworthy efforts in PC industry.
