Tanning beds caught on like wildfire in the mid-1980's, right after Fredrich Wolff popularized the tanning bed in 1978. At the present, tanning beds are not as popular as back then, since the risk of melanoma, or skin cancer, has startled the majority of devoted tanning enthusiasts.
Tanning still remains popular for:
- Teens want to stay attractive
- Getting ready for summar vacation
- Bodybuilders tanning for competitions
- Light therapy for seasonal depression
Regardless of your motivation, you want to get yourself an indoor tan. It's time for you to know how to use a tanning bed. Bear in mind that there are two primary types of tanning units to choose from, the tanning bed and booth. The option of bed versus booth might be determined by the selection available at tanning salons nearby. Ask the clerks of your chosen tanning salon which of their packages will work best for your tanning goal.
Also, have the salon owner choose the best tanning lotion for you. There are just as many varieties of tanning lotions as exist skin types and tanning goals.
After you have bought your tanning package, the attendant allocates a tanning bed and room number.
Once you're in your room, secure and lock the door, and take off your clothes. You can keep the bare essentials on if you're worried about someone walking in on you or frying your hoo-hoo. Or if you're going for an even all-over tan, you should get used to the idea of tanning in the nude to avoid any tan lines.
How to use a tanning bed:
Apply tanning lotion all over your body, but not your face, since the lotion is not hypoallergenic, it can cause acne. Raise the top of the tanning bed or open the tanning booth door, depending upon which one you're using.
If you're using a tanning booth, you might want to bring a CD, tape, or boombox so you can jam out while you're just standing there.
If your hair is long, you'll want to secure your hair up on top of your head using a scrunchy or clip. Otherwise, when the fan starts going, your hair might start flying around, and put funky tan lines on your face.
Next, most importantly, put on the goggles provided by the tanning salon during the entire time that the tanning bed/tanning booth is in operation. The ultraviolet light from tanning lights is so intense that it can cause cataracts when you don't wear proper eye protection. It's not enough to close your eyes. Your eyelids are thin enough that the a lot of the UV will pass through them and still hurt your eyes.
Finally, turn on the tanning booth. You might need a single start button to press or a timer to set, depending upon how your tanning salon works. If you're just starting tanning and are fairly pale, your first few visits should be from six to ten minutes. After a while you can build up to as high as 30 minutes per session.
An important tanning bed fact is that your skin is the same, even though you're using a tanning bed. If you get sunburn quickly at the pool, you're likely to fry even easier in a tanning bed.
Whether you use a bed or a booth, once the timer runs out, the lights will turn off, indicating that you've been roasted to tanned perfection. Exit the bed/booth, take off your sunclipse, and clean off the sweat with a towel. Get clothed again and collect your belongings!
Don't forget to grab your boom box on your way out. Don't shower for the rest of the day; soap's properties can work against your tan if you use them too soon after tanning. Now that you know how to use a tanning bed, you're good to go for a healthy, radiant indoor tan.
