If there is one thing a problem gambler must understand it is that the odds are always in favor of the house. At the time in my life where my friends referred to me as "gamblore" I arrogantly believed that I had every game in the casino figured out to a tea.
Blackjack? Card counting and shuffle tracking.
Roulette? Watching for biased wheels and using the Martingale betting system.
Craps? Dice control. (Yes, I actually believed I could control the roll of the die every single time)
Eventually after losing all my money I came to terms with the fact that I was a loser. But more importantly, I realized that everyone who was telling me that they were "robbing the casinos" were big fat liars who never fessed up to their losses... ever. Furthermore, I now know that the casino labels people like me as "suckers" and probably enjoyed every minute that I believed I could swing the odds to my advantage since of was this constant belief that led me to lose more and more money. Often I would be convinced that the dealers were purposely rigging the game on me somehow when I would lose. I would strongly encourage everyone who will listen to quit gambling today, but if you insist on continuing please mind a few pieces of solid advice which I have accumulated since conquering my own gambling addiction.
Blackjack offers the smallest house edge out of all other games in the casino. If played according to perfect strategy, the house has a 0.5% edge over the player. Point in check, an edge is still and edge, you will lose playing in the long run.
Avoid roulette like the plague. The house has a full 5% over the player in this evil game.
Concepts such as "odds" and "probabilities" only apply in the long term. Thus, three spins on red does not mean a black is due. The odds are the same each and every spin. I can't stress this one enough.
No matter what betting system you might use, it still doesn't affect the odds. In fact, since most betting systems require you to raise your bet after every loss, you will eventually lose more money using these systems since you will be bound to hit large losing streaks and will be prevented from betting any higher due to lack of bank roll or table limits (that's what they were designed for).
No matter, what game you play, if the odds are not in your favor you will not end up winning money in the long term. This is just simple logic. House edge means the house wins, period. If you happen to win the first few hands or spins, take your money and never go back.
So please, keep these probabilities in mind the next time you think you are going to "hit big" at the casino.
