Everyday, a question that I am asked by my readers is this: "What are the top 100 abdominal exercises?" Usually, these are people who are working to lose belly fat or get ripped six-pack abs or a tight, flat tummy. They are surprised when I tell them that you don't need 100 abdominal exercises. Truthfully, what really shocks most people is when I inform them that sit-ups, crunches, leg-lifts, etc, are actually among the LEAST effective ways to get rid of stubborn belly fat or reveal those abs or that flat tummy.
The body's fat-burning hormones are not stimulated by typical "ab" exercises such as sit-ups and crunches. For this reason, they are not effective at burning that stubborn layer of fat that is covering up your abs. If you don't lose belly fat that is over top of your abs, you will never get that six-pack or that tight, flat tummy. Additionally, those exercises tend to workout the wrong abdominal muscles, which can actually lead to your belly getting bigger.
More effective than typical "ab" exercises is a total-body workout plan that will cause your body to burn fat everywhere. This will be much more effective at burning your belly fat and toning your abs. With less than 20 total-body exercises, you are able to work your whole body and trigger your body to lose fat.
As an example, I'd like to show you some quick ab workouts that you should use that will be much more productive than sit-ups or crunches:
A. Mountain Climbers.
B. Front Squats.
C. Dumbbell Rows.
You want to do three or four sets of 8 reps (the Mountain Climbers will be done in time intervals, instead of reps.) If you'd like, you can also do more sets of lower reps (such as 5 sets of 4 or 5 reps.)
For Mountain Climbers, you begin in a push-up position, and then "run" your legs back and forth, bringing your knees up to your chest, and then back out to the starting position. If you want a higher-intensity workout, you can also shuffle your hands 8 to 10 inches forward and backward, while at the same time doing the leg movements. This makes it a total body exercise, for sure! You should do the Mountain Climbers in intervals, such as 30 seconds.
Front squats are almost like back squats, except that this time, you will position the barbell in front of you, on your shoulders. Cross your arms, and hold the barbell in position with your hands against the bar, and your elbows out in front of you. If you have not tried this before, you will require some practice. You should consult a trainer at the gym to assist you with the correct form. Since the weight of the barbell is shifted to the front of your body, this will exercise your abs big-time! Again, this is a total body workout, and will definitely help you to lose fat and reveal your abs.
Dumbbell rows are done in a pushup position, with your hands on the dumbbells. Row one dumbbell up, and balance your body with the other hand. Then bring the dumbbell down and change arms (row the other dumbell back and balance the body with the arm you just lowered.) This alternating motion will provide an intense workout for your ab core. This is another total body exercise that will stimulate your body to lose fat.
When you finish each exercise, you should rest {thirty|30}}} seconds, then begin the next exercise. Rest a minute or two after each set.
For sure, when you are finished with this workout, you will understand that you've just had one of the toughest abdominal workouts ever, without actually doing any typical "ab" exercises.
