Can’t Lose Weight? You May Have Insulin Resistance
If you are having trouble losing weight despite dieting, you may have a condition known as insulin resistance, or pre diabetes. Losing weight may be an almost impossible task in this situation, unless you address the root of the problem, which is the insulin resistance.
Insulin is basically a hormone that helps your body turn the sugar in foods, to energy. When someone has insulin resistance, what is happening is that the tissues are no longer using the insulin properly; a result is that the body increasingly makes more insulin, but the tissues are not absorbing it.
The end result is too much sugar in the blood, as well as possible a rapid weight gain. Insulin resistance often leads to the development of Type 2 diabetes.
Some risk factors that could indicate that you have insulin resistance include,
· A family history of diabetes
· A history of having gestation diabetes during pregnancy
· High blood sugar levels
· Obesity
· A large amount of fat around the middle
The good news is that you can avoid developing Type 2 diabetes, as well as lose weight with some simple lifestyle changes. The most important elements of reversing insulin resistance is to get plenty of strengthening exercise, and to eliminate many carbohydrates from your diet.
Carbohydrates are the major culprits of causing high blood sugar, and when you reduce your carbs intake, you will be retraining your body to use insulin correctly.
Building muscle through strengthening exercises is also very useful, as the body uses insulin more efficiently when you are developing muscle.
A change of lifestyle today can help you to lose the weight you want, plus save you from many health problems later. If you believe you may have insulin resistance, contact your healthcare provider for an evaluation.
