Choosing a Great Domain Name

Tips On Choosing a Domain Name

Your domain name will probably be used for several purposes, including your web site,
email address, and will be an integral part of your company identity, so take some
careful tiime and effort when choosing a domain name. It is the most important first
step in building a new website, so expect take some time in researching your domain name.

The following lists common conventions for domain extensions. You should avoid the web
extensions that do not apply to your business or industry.

.com commercial business domain
.net commercial network
.org nonprofit organizations
.edu educational institution
.gov government agency
.mil military

Try to choose a ".com" domain name, as it is by far the most popular extension.
It is the first extension that people type on a search engine when they are looking
for a website. Many of the best ".com" extensions have been taken, but this
doesn't mean you can't have a successful business with ".info", ".org", or ".net."

Your domain name should be descriptive of your product, brand name, or website services.
If you have an existing company name, try using that for your domain. Also, if your business
has just started, now would be a good time to come up with a business name and domain
that are one and the same.

When you are brainstorming for a new domain name, try to be creative and try all options.
List as many words as you can think of related to your preferred domain name.
List as many words as you can think of that are related to the content of your website.
Remember, hypens and numbers are acceptable. When using hypens, try to limit the
domain name to two or three words that are easy to remember.

Register your first and last name if you are a consultant or professional that operates your
busness under your personal name. This would apply to graphic designers, lawyers,
accountants, doctors, and other related professions.

Use search engine key words or common words or phrases that customers use
when describing your business.

A thesuarus can be a very useful tool in finding words that are an optional choice
or that have the same meaning.

Try to use shorter, memorable domain names that are harder to mispell. Longer domain
names are harder to remember.

Don't register the digit zero, because it is often confused with the vowel "O". There are
exceptions to this rule however, such as the domain "007.com"

Most domain registrars offer cheap domain registration of .biz and .info domains,
as low as $1.99 for .info. While these domains are not as ideal as a ".com" domain,
they are certainly a better choice than long cryptic sub-domains.

If you are having trouble finding a domain name that is not already registered, there are a few websites
that can assist you. They are name suggestion tools, and will take one or two words and look for available
combinations. You can find these services by searching
in the search engines under "domain name suggestion."

One final step is choosing the right domain registrar. Be sure to register you domain with a registrar that is trustworthy, experienced, and has a strong customer base.
Also, make make sure you opt in on the automatic renewal notification program, so that your domain does not expire.
