A second kind of injury would be ventricular fibrillation. Ventricular fibrillation is the chaotic action of electrical impulses that power the muscles of the heart. Normally, this electrical impulses would have a certain regular activation but because some parts of the heart are damaged, they tend to become wild in action making the heart stop pumping thus stopping the flow of blood to the other organs of the body. Unless the flow of blood is restored within 5 minutes permanent damage can be inflicted on organs ( such as the brain) and even ultimately death can install.

Ventricular fibrillation is responsible for most of the death in heart attacks. This is when the patient isn’t able to reach help in proper time. Still , prognosis for the people who reach the emergency room is very good, this way more than 90% of the patients are resuscitated and are given medical care. The other 1 – 10 % who later die, do so because of complication or because the damage done to the heart has been to great.

Death by ventricular fibrillation can be avoided most of the time and this is because of the CPR that is usually given to the patient within 5 minutes of the heart stopping. CPR begins by compressing the chest so that the heart will start pumping blood again, followed by artificial breathing for the victim. At the arrival of paramedics, drugs can be administered, and to increase the chances of survival an electric shock will be given to convert ventricular fibrillation back to a normal heart rhythm. Quick response and well prepared paramedics and venues greatly increase the chances of survival for the victim.

A lot of other factors can increase the risk of developing atherosclerosis and heart attacks such as: increased blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, use of tobacco, diabetes mellitus, male gender, and a family history of coronary heart disease. While on one hand we have genetically determined risk factors, witch are more difficult to change ore deal with, on the other hand there is the life style that one chooses to have, but witch is easily modified for the good and well being of the person.

Even with these risks we must keep in mind that we live in the age of technology and much has progressed since earlier times allowing us the access to better medication and care provided by the doctor.
