At present, spanking is highly disregarded as a form of disciplining kids because it entails negative impact on the kid. Hitting your youngster to discipline him will mar his self-esteem and will only engender fear or trauma. It also becomes less helpful if you will only hit your kid and do not clarify why you hit him. He will not be able to relate the punishment with his wrong acts, and therefore would only think that you hit him for no or vague reasons.

Time outs. Time out is now the more favored form of toddler discipline. Time outs make the kid identify his mistake and realize why it is wrong. When a youngster commits a blunder or disobeys a rule, he is made to reflect on a "naughty chair" or stand in a corner for some minutes. Within that span of time he is made to think of his acts and deprived of any distractions. This is a more subtle way of disciplining a kid. That is why more parents use time outs to avert their feelings of great disappointment and anger towards the toddler.
