Do's and Don'ts of Online Video Advertising

Video marketing is a growing form of advertising that has exploded in recent months. It went from a relatively sparsely-used tool, to the standard in marketing extremely quickly. However, just because many people are engaging in the practice, doesn't necessarily mean that everyone is succeeding with it. What exactly separates those that are successful video marketers from those that do not get results? Let's look at the "do's" and "don'ts" of video advertising.

The main thing that you want to do in your video is try and relate to your customer. If you can contribute some useful information to your potential customers, this will be very beneficial. When you give them something for free, they will be much more likely to trust you in the long run. The important thing with any form of marketing is to develop relationships with your prospects. People buy from people that they like. Therefore, if you can develop a trusting relationship with your prospects, they will be much more likely to buy from you.

Do try to make your prospects feel comfortable with you. If they see you as a real person in your videos, they will start to get comfortable with you. If they get comfortable with you, they will start to think of you as a friend, subconsciously. Then they will have a much easier time when it comes time to buy something from you.

You don't want to just make a hyped up commercial for your product. This isn't television and you don't want to make it feel as such. You don't want to make it feel like an infomercial either. The last thing you want to do is get some guy that screams at the camera and tells about the wonderful features of your product.

You also don't ever want to talk down to your customers or confuse them. Make your videos easy to understand. "How-to" videos work great. Explaining something to your prospective customers in easy English is essential.

You also don't ever want to try and copy someone else exactly. In marketing, copying those that succeed isn't always the best path. While you can take general themes from them, you don't want to copy them step-by-step. Marketing needs to be creative and original. If you want to get people's attention, you don't need to do anything that they've seen a million times. Try and think of something completely original and you will be much better off.

Don't expect your video to become an overnight sensation on the internet. We've all heard stories of someone slapping a video together and then waking up with thousands of hits the next morning. However, in reality, this doesn't usually happen. You have to promote your video a little bit and get the word out about it before anyone will start to watch it.

Video advertising is a fantastic medium to show off your products. You can literally show off any product under the sun through the use of a short video. Just remember that there are ways to do it right and there are ways to do it wrong. Think about what you're putting out there before you publish it. Make sure that it represents you in the way you would want to be seen.
