Back in the mid fifties, credit counseling became formal in America. This came about with the birth of the NFCC – the National Foundation for Credit Counseling – in 1951. The foundation conducted public awareness campaigns on credit, amongst other things.

To organize the competition within the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, the AICCCA was born. AICCCA is the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies that came into being in 1993. This solution is somewhat informal, but it works. The American Association of Debt Management Organizations, AADMO, is a trade organization for credit counselors in the United States of America. Of the three major trade organizations, this is the largest. The other two are the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) and the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies (AICCCA).

As a credit counselor in the United States, you are free to join whatever trade organization catches your fancy. There are a myriad of them, ranging from those born as far back as the mid-twentieth century to those realized only months back. You should know, though, that you are not required by any edict to do so.

In the northern hemisphere, credit counseling is every bit as important as it is in the United States. As a matter of fact, certain people and agencies offer credit advice for free. It goes to show how much importance they place on it.
