Is your business one of the 175,000 of small businesses who just designed a web site that gets no visitors? One of the biggest misunderstandings about Internet marketing is that just having a site will bring you people who turn into clients - but it just doesn't seem to end up that way. Too many believe in what I refer to as "Field of Dreams" web marketing, thinking "If you build it, they will come."

Is my website even showing up in Google?
Simply putting up a website, doesn't instantly imply that Google will index your website. It's easy to see if Google has listed your website by looking on Google for "site:mydomain.tld", as an example, "site:free-reprint-articles.com". If your search comes back with any results in the slightest, Google is aware that you're there. If your search results show the dreaded "Your search did not match any documents", they've never heard of you – they just don't know that your website exists at all.
How do I get my website into Google?
Sure, you can "ask" Google to index your site, but that will put you in a looooong queue of web sites trying to get indexed. The absolutely most effective choice for getting indexed fast is to have a link to your website – somewhere. Once someone links to your website, and Google stumbles that link, your website will be in line for fast-indexing.
So how do you get my first link?
There are several ways to do this, without spending a dime. You can:
- Ask a buddy to place a link to your website,
- Post a guestbook entry providing a link to your website,
- Post a reply on someone's blog and include a link to your website,
- Create your own blog on Xanga.com and link to your website,
- Set up an account on a social bookmarking service like Reddit and create a bookmark to your website,
- Author a free reprint article and upload it to SearchWarp, EZineArticles, or Free-Reprint-Articles.com
The more regularly Google checks the place where your link was set up, the faster Google will realize that another site links to you. Some pages are checked as seldom as once every few months, others are checked several times an hour. The fastest means to get your site crawled are using social bookmarking services or article marketing.
If you have access to your website logs, look through the records for hits by an agent called GoogleBot. This is the robot used by Google to discover websites. After you that Google has been wandering around your website, it doesn't be long until your site: query shows a few of your pages. Regrettably, that's just the start of your worries…
So, when do I start getting traffic?
After your website is in Google, why doesn't it show up in search results? If you dug through every page of search results, you'll discover that website is toward the end of results for everything but your company name. And if that business name is pretty widespread, your site's probably at the end of that list, too.
Playing in the Sandbox…
Your website will stay in a special location that search engine optimization experts refer to "the sandbox". Even [though your website is exceptionally] well linked, liked, and built - it just doesn't show up on search results until it has been around long enough for Google to think that your website is not a spam-site.
How much time your website waits in the sandbox relies on many aspects and Google won't spill the beans. The chief thing to bear in mind is that Internet marketing is a long-term effort. There aren't any magic pills your website can take to fool Google. They do their best to ensure that people are given the best search results. Making your website suffer through the sandbox is Google's way of meeting surfers needs and keeping their position as the best search engine.
