1. Automate your thermostat with a programmable thermostat. This will let you turn down heat to 65 degrees at night automatically. By turning the thermostat down 7 degrees during your sleeping time you will save as much as 10% on heating costs each year. While an automated thermostat may cost you around $100- you can make up this cost quickly with your monthly heating savings. 2. Seal cracks in doors and windows with caulk weather stripping. Remember that there are non-toxic options that are water based. Don’t forget to look for “air traps” around doggie doors. 3. Install Storm Windows. By using interior storm windows or certified windows you can save around $500 per year by replacing single panes and $100 by replacing double panes. 4. Add Insulation. Make sure you bulk up insulation in the attic and you can save up to 20-35 % on heating costs each year! You can even locate non-toxic natural insulation for your home. 5. Make sure your fireplace is secure! If you don’t use your fireplace and don’t have a screen that has a tight seal – your heat is literally “going up in smoke” – right up the chimney. 6. Run the ceiling fan on slowest speed clockwise. This will pull cool air up and displace warmer air by pulling it down the walls. A desk fan placed near a heat source can have a similar effect. This can reduce consumption by up to 10% each year. Go to http://www.mygreen-family.com/ for more ideas on how to go green!
