Breast milk or Formula? Over the years there has been much talk about the nutrition for a newborn baby. It will work for both babies and meet their needs, but breast milk is the preferred choice.
There are antibodies after a baby is born that are very important for the first few days after birth. The most important one is the colostrum. Breast milk is also the perfect food for your baby because it is natural and breastfeeding allows a wonderful time of bonding. Infants who are nursed develop more effective immune systems and suffer from fewer allergic reactions than their bottle-fed counterparts.
The FDA ensures that bottle-fed infants get the nourishment they require to grow properly. You can get baby formula in a liquid, powder or ready right out of the container. Powdered mixtures are the least expensive while the pre-mixed servings are pricier. Formulas need to be refrigerated at all times and should be used within 48 hours of being prepared. Make sure to fix the baby formula according to the directions. If the mixture does not contain enough water, the baby may suffer from indigestion. Too much water can mean that the baby is not getting enough food.
Many people believe that feeding a baby solid food will help them sleep. Those who stand behind you will want you to begin on the diet immediately. Feeding a baby solid foods before they are ready is not a good idea. The correct time to introduce any solid food is when your baby is between four and six months. Until this time your baby gets all of his nutrition needed from breast milk or formulas. You will be informed by your pediatrician when the time is right to add solid foods to your baby's diet.
The very first solid food you give to a baby is cereal. Rice cereal is considered the best one to start with, of the different cereals out there. Most babies can digest this cereal quite easily. Use breast milk or formula to thin the cereal. You don't ever want to add more than a single new food item at once. In order to determine which food is giving your baby symptoms of food intolerance, you need to feed him one type of food at a time so you can isolate the cause of the allergy/intolerance. Once your baby handles rice cereal you can try others like oatmeal.
It is always good to try new foods with your baby every 3 to 5 days and make sure you watch how they tolerate it. Healthy, pureed baby foods like fruits and vegetables make the perfect start. You should start feeding veggies first then add the sweeter foods like fruit. Bits of fruit is a good way to make boring cereal interesting.
Always follow your pediatrician’s guidelines.
When a child is six to eight months old, they can sit without support and can chew a few soft foods. Most babies are capable of eating soft fruits, especially mashed bananas, and they react well to other finger foods as well.
Arrowroot crackers and baby toast are also loved by most babies at this age. This is when you can introduce a chunkier texture to the foods you feed baby.
Once your baby is 8-12 months old, you can start with other foods like meats and later egg yolks. Egg whites are not a good idea for your child until they're older. Additionally, yogurts and cottage cheese can supplement your diet, adding more variety.
When your child starts to feed on their own you should help with this. Finger foods that are soft and easily eaten can be given and you can help your baby use his spoon. Do not feed a baby anything that can not be crushed and chewed by gum power. This diet does not allow for the intake of raisins or grapes.
