Flashback--Arrested Development's "3 Years, 5 months and 2 days in the life of..."

Back in the day, I loved Arrested Development. They came out at a time when I was just starting to be aware of larger world issues and my desires to at least understand if not help what was going on in the world. While looking through a discount bin at a local pawn shop I jumped for joy when I came across their release 3 Years, 5 months and 2 days in the life of … And it was only a dollar! I felt like I had struck gold.
When the Black Eyed Peas came out with Where is the Love I thought wow, someone else doing what Arrested Development did. But unfortunately it was only a single song and the rest of the Black Eyed Peas songs were about partying and sex. So I was excited to get the chance to revisit songs by Arrested Development.
Now, the back beats in the songs on 3 Years, 5 months and 2 days in the life of …are very early 90s, there is no doubt about that. But the message in the songs is still relevant today. And the songs are fun despite their serious message. They discuss racism between blacks and whites and racism between blacks (People Everyday). They also rap about the homeless in Mr. Wendel, which is still one of my favorite songs.
Each song is geared towards helping African Americans feel proud of who they are and where they come from, without putting anyone else down. Now that I am older listening to the songs, I can comprehend and appreciate the beauty of them, especially the haunting Raining Revolution.
When this album was released it was totally different from the other rap albums that were out there. There was no violence or hate in it. It was all about positive chance. And with everything that is happening in the world today, these songs are still relevant.
