A Power Plant which diesel engine is used as the prime mover for the generation of electrical energy is known as a diesel power station. In a diesel power station, diesel engine is used as the prime mover. The diesel burns inside the engine and the products of this combustion act as the “working fluid” to produce mechanical energy. The diesel engine drives the alternator which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. As the generation cost is considerable due to high price of diesel, therefore, such power station are only used to produce small power.
Diesel generator sets are used in places without connection to the power grid or as emergency power-supply if the grid fails. These generators are widely used not only for emergency power, but also many have a secondary function for providing back up power to utility grids. Diesel generators sets can be operated together (in parallel). The use of parallel running generators provides the advantages of more capacity, efficiency and redundancy. A power plant driven by diesel generators will typically include between three and six machines.
Currently, diesel generator sets seem to be the preferred option for our rural people who reside outside the grid network and in the outer islands. The approvals for the diesel generator sets and internal electrical works (house-wiring) for all approved schemes came in later in the year, and that left us with no options but to have the work carried out in early December 2005 and January 2006.In 2005, a total of 11 diesel generators were implemented. In our attempts to ensure the effectiveness in terms of quality of the service that was being provided, all electrical works (upgrading, service & maintenance, house-wiring, installation etc) has been contracted out to allow both Government bodies and private firms to participate in this rural electrification work.
Looking to our future, our relationship with the oil industries and our dependency on foreign oil, hopefully, will drive us to explore alternatives with a more open mind.
