Perhaps the reason that many of our waistbands are growing is because of our work and entertainment choices. Thanks to technological advances the majority of us spend a great deal of time in front of a computer. A current poll from the Institute for Medicine and Public Health detailed that out of 63,000 lots of folks spend 56 hours per week sitting down, whether it’s in front of the computer screen, TV, or video games. Sadly, it found that women can be far less active than men.
A lot of us feel that we have an active lifestyle but the data shows we spend most of our days in a sitting position. By sitting we are increasing our chances of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Because of how much we sit, physicians are probing inactive physiology which looks at the effects of sitting too much.
In the past, everyone had active lifestyles. They needed to do a variety of tasks. Today we own labor-saving devices that give us more free time - and we fritter it away lazing about. “Electronic living has all but destroyed every flicker of motion from our daily lives” reported James Levine M.D., Ph.D., from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
You can achieve so much and still not even stand up. But the problem is when you sit for long periods of time your metabolism starts to become sluggish and shut down. When we don’t move, our muscles tighten then our circulation decreases, which ultimately burns fewer calories. The enzymes that assist us in burning fat quit functioning if they aren’t used and by sitting the whole 24 hour period our fat burners decrease by 50 percent.
In addition the less you move the less blood sugar your body makes use of. Experts have examined and noted that the chances of getting diabetes rise 7 percent for every two hours spent on your backside. Your risk of heart disease goes up as well because the enzymes are inactive. And you’re also more apt to develop depression.
The more exercise and movement your body gets the better off you’ll be. Even if you sit on the phone all day take breaks such as walking to a colleague’s office instead of emailing, or volunteer to run errands for the company. And instead of having a huge water bottle at your desk take a cup and then refill it. The more activity the better. And it might just save your life.
