The Flop
The first thing you need to know about playing the flop is exactly what the flop is. During a game of Holdem you will be initially dealt two cards. They are your cards alone and should not be revealed to any other players at the table. However, in order to form a hand to win the game and thus the pot, you have to have access to the five cards necessary to make up your hand. This is where the flop comes in. After the dealer has given each player two cards, he will then burn a card (thus taking it out of play) before laying three cards in the middle of the table. That is the flop.
Although two further cards are dealt at two different times in the individual hand, playing the flop is the most crucial time of the game. This is because you will have a good idea as to whether you can form a decent hand out of it. Once the three cards have been dealt, the dealer turns them face up so every player can clearly see them and work out his or her chances of winning that particular hand. When you have assessed your cards in relation to the three that have been placed on the table during the flop, you will be able to bet accordingly.
Betting After The Flop
On the strength of your cards and of the three community cards that have been turned, you must make a decision when playing the flop. It is your prerogative as to whether you bet, check or fold. The first bet goes to the individual that put the small blind into the pot, who is said to be Under The Gun. If he or she chooses to check then everyone can. However, if one person bets then everyone else has to either bet or fold. The bet you make must match or be higher than the big blind that was placed in before the cards were dealt.
If your cards are unlikely to yield a good hand when playing the flop then you may choose to fold, in which case you are out of that hand. However, if you already have a good hand or the potential to have one following the turn then you may choose to bet. The amount you can bet depends on the variation of Holdem you are playing but many individuals are conservative after the flop so as not to alert other players if they have a good hand.
A lot falls into the category of strategy when you are playing the flop. However, the main thing to remember is your odds of winning the hand. Experienced poker players automatically weigh up the odds of winning but if you are just starting out then it may take you a little longer to pick this up. That may be a problem in Internet poker rooms because many set a time limit to try and keep the game flowing. As such, you should take the time to learn about playing the flop before putting any money on the line.
