Hardware is important, great software can\'t make up for a poor system.

Imagine this scenario: You just got a computer from a friend and now you have two, you notice the computer is a bit dated. Regardless of its age you begin to think inside your head \"I can make this piece of junk into something amazing\". You don\'t decide to purchase any new hardware or get any upgraded ram. You begin by removing the installed Windows 98 and try to upgrade to vista despite the computer not meeting the minimum ram or CPU. You figure in your mind, if I give the computer windows vista with ready boost everything will be great.... WRONG!

Poor hardware cannot be compromised with an OS that increased performance to create a decent system. That principle is the basis for computer hardware 101 and Operating System Logic 202. Despite vista being designed to make up for a lack of ram by providing the option of ready boost or SD card for ram, it cannot turn a computer designed for windows 98 into a decent/smooth running vista OS enabled computer. The truth of the matter is that no matter how great software is or how amazing an OS has the potential to be there is no way it will work well on a computer that does not have the hardware for it to work the way it was designed to.

Now if a computer only has 1 GB of ram, well you can do something about that if you want to run vista smoother. Upgrading ram is relatively easy to do whether you are on a laptop or on a desktop machine. All you need to do is find what kind of ram your system supports and if it is at maximum capacity or not.
If you have any of your computer manuals you can find out that information easily, if not your manufacturers website should have something that can tell you that information. A good thing about upgrading ram is that it is very cheap to purchase. You can increase your computers performance a great deal by simply adding some more ram.

I’m not saying that if you have an older computer your best solution is to upgrade all of its parts and then install a better more powerful OS. The truth is that older computers aren’t able to be upgraded by that much. Sometimes it’s unwise to invest money in and older machine that might not be able to even support the newer hardware you are trying to install. Another thing is that upgrades are just upgrades, it is sometimes better to just purchase a new machine. It could save you some money, and time.
