To improve the safety of seniors, one of the most important tools is to prevent falls. Since the most common cause of falls is the staircase, this often means keeping the stairs in good repair and sometimes installing mobility lifting devices like stair lifts. One other way to prevent accidents on the stairs is to use a dumbwaiter to move items around the house.
Carrying items up and down the stairs can often be quite difficult, especially in homes that have long staircases or staircases that have bends in them. On any given day or at the very least several times a week, most homeowners will carry at least one thing up the stairs. For the mobility challenged this can be quite difficult, which is one reason that the dumbwaiter is such an important tool.
Dumbwaiters are devices that are like mini-elevators. They travel vertically between floors in a shaft-way, carrying many household objects and goods. People often use them to carry their laundry, books, and groceries, but the applications are vast.
Today, most homes utilize electric dumbwaiters, but manual dumbwaiters have been popular for many thousands of years. The major advantage of the electric dumbwaiter is that after the dumbwaiter is loaded, the only effort required to raise or lower the lift is the push of a button. A manual dumbwaiter, on the other hand, will require the user to physically raise and lower the lift, usually by pulling on a rope.
Despite using things like pulleys to help reduce the amount of work required, it still takes a lot of effort to use a manual dumbwaiter and they can not typically support as much weight as an electric dumbwaiter can. Many also require that you tie the rope off, with failing to do so resulting in the dumbwaiter dropping to the ground.
Often, the easiest way to install a dumbwaiter is to build it into the house. This allows the home builder to plan a space for the shaft. Typically for residential dumbwaiters, the shaft requires a vertical space between floors that is 2 foot by 2 foot wide. This can vary by model, but this is the average. While it is easier to plan for the shaft as the home is being constructed, they can also be added to most existing homes.
When adding a dumbwaiter to an existing home, often the most difficult part is determining where to place the shaft. However, there is almost always an area in the home that will work and most electric dumbwaiters can be configured so that the dumbwaiter opens up on different sides, greatly increasing the versatility of these lifting devices. When all else fails, it is almost always possible to use the space in a closet for the dumbwaiter shaft.
Preventing falls is very important and often a dumbwaiter will not only make doing housework much easier, but also much safer. They are a great tool for seniors, but people of all ages quite often use dumbwaiters in their homes.
To increase safety while using the stairs, stair lifts as well as dumbwaiters are often used. These lifting devices can greatly improve safety.
