Home Security-safe And Secure At Home

In 2004 the Bureau of Justice reported that:
-77% of all crime was property related
-17% of all crime domiciles were violated by a burglar
-85% of all burglaries the offender gained entry into the house or other building.
The very real threat of home invasion is there. Burglary in this country is alive and well.
That is in part why more and more homeowners have alarms for their homes. Other reasons are: the value of the home, in 2006 the average cost of a new home will be in the neighborhood of $230,000; and the value of the contents. The contents of homes these days with flat screen TV's, computers, and easy to steal and market items like cell phones, iPods, DVD players, and jewelry makes most homes attractive targets for the average burglar. So why don't more homeowners protect their property?

There are so many options to choose from when it comes to protecting your home that it may be confusing. From very expensive video security systems to dummy security cameras to inexpensive options like self installed alarms for windows and doors, the list is almost endless. Many security companies offer a lot of equipment for virtually nothing but make it up in a large monthly fee.

In the final analysis no matter how much money you spend to have a company watch your property or whatever you do on your own, nothing works as well as a little common sense on your part to make your home safe and secure. Here are some common sense steps to take.

--Make sure windows and doors are secure

--Join or establish a "neighborhood watch" in conjunction with your local police
department

--Make sure you have good sturdy locks and deadbolts

--Trim hedges and trees that might give an intruder "cover" to enter windows or doors
without being seen

--Put indoor and outdoor lights on a timer set to different times to give the appearance of
occupancy when the property is vacant

Following these simple suggestions can save you a lot of grief and money but cannot provide the level of security most homeowners demand these days to make their homes safe and secure which of course is much more expensive.

Chances are very good that you are reading this because in some way crime has touched your life or you want to be proactive and protect yourself, family, home, or business from the ravages of crime. That is the first step.
