You wouldn't believe how plain can it be to make other persons smile..Illustrating why is it that we find stuff funny (from a neurologists way of thinking), is the first thing to do.At times we discover a certain thing we have never heard of in the past, the brain composes a brand new "route'', from one neural cell to the other.
That ''route'' what we call a synapse and it works like this:While thinking about food, if we think of, let's say, pinapples our brain will make a route (the synapse which will get thicker), connecting the two neural cells that contain the data we have on food and that fruit. The next time the food pops up in your mind, there are good chances the apples will come along, as well. You must be all like, "This has nothing to do with humor". And you're wrong, this is the actual way humor works.
This process begins with you hearing a short, yet common story. Stand-up comedians call this a setup. So now, you're expected to have a certain way of thinking towards the story you've heard. Furthermore, the brain connects the given setup to an appropriate punch-line. Now, you probably won't hear the same punch-line that you thought of, but a different one, instead and it will make you laugh. Most of the people don't understand this right away, but the next example will surely explain it better.

The Punch-line:
An income tax refund.
How did you feel after hearing the setup? I am positive you thought the car was being driven by one of the three. It's ok, because our brain simply works that way, during the setup. You've noticed that the punch line is totally different than what you have expected it to be. This is in fact the main principle of the way humor works.
You should create the best possible setup, as it's really important. Good comedians will always have a setup that only delivers the basic facts, so that there are many possible punch-lines you can think of. The more you think that your punch-line is the most suitable one, the more you'll laugh when you hear the actual one. If you have already heard the joke, it will most likely no longer be funny, because your brain knows the punch line and there are no more new routes being made in the brain.
