How does exercising affect your metabolism?

It is a well-known fact that indulging in some sort of exercise on a daily basis or on fixed schedules will help in keeping body fit and healthy. Exercise need not be a sprint of 100 meters in less than 15 seconds or a strenuous workout for a longer period. Simple walk or a stroll in the garden, or jogging for 15 to 20 minutes a day, or just even walking to a nearby shopping mall or grocery to buy some consumables can be a good exercise. Anybody and everybody who care for their own body and health and need a change in their metabolism should indulge in some form of exercising at regular intervals.

How does exercise affect metabolism?

Metabolism is nothing but the process in which the food we consume is converted into energy that is needed for the body to survive. Energy is not required only for doing activities. Innumerable activities are carried out in our body even though we may not be aware of those activities. Even if you lye down on a bed in a still condition, your body is working. The heart is functioning, the liver, the brain and brain nerves and other vital parts of the body are functioning. For this, you need energy and through the process of metabolism, you get that energy to sustain and survive in this world.

It has been found that about 60% of the energy produced from the food we consume is used to keep the body alive and its organs functioning normally. The balance 40% of the energy can be effectively used for other activities such as walking, running, or doing other day-to-day activities. Assume that you do not do any work in a day other than eating at regular intervals, about 35% to 40% of the energy from the food remains unutilized or calories are not burnt, leading to obesity and such other problems related to over-weight.

If one were to live happily with good health, maintaining his body slim and beautiful, then he or she should ensure that excess weight is not put. To control weight and reduce it, if necessary, one has to ensure that the energy spent is equivalent or more than the energy derived from the food he consumes. This is where exercise comes in to picture.

When you indulge in some sort of exercise, you spend more energy than is normally required as part of the exercise. This additional spending or burning of calories at the time of exercise will make you feel better and help you in reducing the excess weight over a period. Not only will you be consuming more calories during exercise, you will be consuming extra calories even when you stay at rest because the additional energy spent during exercise needs to be replenished by the cells. More energy is consumed at a relatively quicker time even when you do not indulge in exercise, leading to higher metabolic rate.

The golden rule for reducing weight is to increase the metabolic rate, or, in other words, burn more calories than produced in the body through the process of metabolism. If one were to reap the benefits of exercising on metabolism, he or she should ensure that dieting is not followed and he or she should not starve in the name of dieting, especially while doing exercises regularly.
