If you didn't get a chance to watch the United States Men's hockey team this winter olympics in Vancouver, Canada you really missed out. The team went above and beyond any expectations.The players all traded their usual NHL Jerseys for USA Jerseys. Everyone knew the team would do well. But it was a suprise how well they did. After losing the gold medal game to the Canadian team 3-2 the future for US olympic hockey looks pretty bright after stunning performances by Ryan Miller, Zach Parise and others. The question I offer is will this help the National Hockey League?
I personally believe it will. The game was watched on average by 27.6 Million people! People that might not normally be exposed to NHL hockey may just be new fans after the olympics. It wouldn't suprise me to see an increase in sales of NHL jerseys and NHL merchandise. The olympics showed the talent and skill of the NHL players. Whether they were Canadian or American.
Also shown by the American's was the intensity and speed of the NHL. Anyone who has not seen that type of skill and speed in professional ice hockey might have been suprised by it. However pro hockey, especially in the NHL has always been an extremely fast game. It's also very physical with all the body checking going on. And if you didn't know all that.. you do now.
So now that the winter olympics are over and everyone has gone home, it'll only be a short while before all the players on team USA will be putting on their NHL jerseys and going to war again. This time it won't be for country but for their clubs. And this season like all of them, should be entertaining and great. NHL merchandise sales should be up after such a great showing by the US team. The NHL and American hockey surely appreciates it.
