The winter season is tough on the skin, for dry air and harsh wind can sap moisture from the skin, causing cracking, chapping, and irritation. Changing temperature means a change of routine, no matter which part of the world you live in. If you want to look like beautiful in cold winter, you have to learn some winter skin care techniques. Here are some tips to help you keep your skin as youthful-looking and healthy as possible throughout the winter months.
Don't take long, hot showers. Hot showers may sound attractive in the cold winter and they can help you warm up, but they strip skin of its natural moisturizing lipids, leaving your skin dry. Instead, take a short, warm shower; pat your skin almost dry, then put on a good moisturizer while skin is still damp. You will need a super-emollient lotion for hands, heels, or anywhere else you experience especially dry, cracked skin.
Continue to protect your skin from sun damage. While seasons change, one thing remains constant: the sun. No matter what season it is, it's still shining, and you still need a sunscreen to protect your skin against harmful ultraviolet rays. Even though it's not blazing hot, your skin is still vulnerable to damage from the sun's ultraviolet rays. Since you're usually bundled up when outside in the wintertime, you don't need to slather sunscreen all over yourself, but try to wear a moisturizer with SPF 15 on your face and all exposed skin throughout the winter. Do wear a high-SPF sunscreen if you'll be skiing. The sunlight-reflecting quality of snow can leave you with severe sunburn from a day on the slopes.
Exfoliate at least twice a week. This will remove dead cells and allow the skin to absorb extra moisture. The oil which we complain about in the summer is no longer being produced because of cooler winter temperatures. Therefore the skin looses the water which should be retained in the lower dermis of the skin, which can lead to premature aging of the skin and fine lines, whilst your skin can appear puffy and grey.
Moisturize frequently. You should choose soap or cleanser with oils and emollients. The more oil a moisturizer contains, the more moisture will be retained. After bathing, pat dry, then replenish with an overall body moisturizer. Oils can also be added to bath water, which can penetrate and nourish the skin.
Use a humidifier. With the heat on and the windows closed, the air inside your home can become very dry causing dryness and itching skin, so it is important to use a humidifier to help keep your nasal passages from drying out and your skin from becoming dry, cracked and itchy. Use a humidifier to place moisture in the air. They're not too pricey, so get one for each room of the house that you spend a lot of time in.
Drink Plenty of Water. This is a year round tip, but often avoided during the winter months. You'd better drink at least eight glasses a water a day. Replenishing your body with H2O gives you energy, benefits your overall health, helps your not over eat, and helps your skin from becoming dehydrated.
