How to add highlights to your Hair at Home

Many people love to have highlights in their hair however getting this done professionally can cost a lot of money. The question is why not do it yourself? Well you might be worried that it won’t look very good if you do it yourself and this can be a problem. There are right ways to do it and this article will help.

I think we have all seen people with highlights that look like they have been done at home and they really are not impressive. However over the years the products you can get to use at home have improved significantly. If you use them in the right way you can have salon looking highlights for a fraction of the price.

The first thing you want to decide on is how you want your highlights to look. Go through some magazines and see examples and the ones you like the best. You can do this by looking at celebrity magazines or you can buy specialist hair magazines and see the ones you think will suit you the best. Some are bold and some are subtle and this will affect what you do. Once you know how you want your hair to look you will know what you want to create.

You now need to go out and buy a home highlighting kit and the type you buy will depend on the length of hair that you have. If you have short hair you should look for kits that include a cap and a hook. This will allow you to target where the highlights go more easily. However if you have long hair then you should look for one that has an application brush. This will allow you to place the highlights where you want more easily than other types of kits.

You need to make sure the colour you pick suits the look you are going for. If you want a subtle look then the colour should only be a couple of shades lighter than your natural hair colour. Whereas if you want something more bold then you should be aiming for a colour that is vastly different from your natural hair colour. You should also take your natural skin colouring into account and pick a colour that will suit you. If you have a dark skin tome then you may find a yellow colour does not work and you want to go for something whiter. Use the same rules as you would for completely bleaching your hair.

Make sure your highlights are applied on dry hair to have the best effect. Do this in the bathroom and make sure you, your clothes and the room are adequately covered.

Decide if you want thick or thin highlights and then apply the highlights to the sections of the hair that you want to change colour. Remember that if your highlights are going to be thick then the chunks of hair you apply it to will be thicker.

Make sure you read all the instructions on the product that you buy and leave it in your hair for the length of time that is required for your product. Once it is complete you should rinse it off in accordance with the instructions of your product. Remember to keep your colour protected by using a special colour protection shampoo.
