Barclays Bank, who sponsor the English Premier League, have been holding a competition in India to discover the country’s most die-hard football fan, in the “Biggest Fan of India” contest.
They began their hunt over six months back and thousands upon 1000's of soccer followers from all around the extensive continent applied for this honor, sending in scrapbooks, videos, photographs and extensive correspondence in proof of these claims.
The judges, with the ex-Man Utd heroes Gary Pallister in addition to Bryan Robson, will have had had a testing time attempting to pick a winner from such a big collection of entrants, but they finally chose to present the reward of two VIP tickets to a Premier League match to Aby Baby Kuruvilla, who had sent in a tape of him singing long and passionately on the subject of his beloved Arsenal Football club!
Aby, a twenty four year-old from Bangalore, is justifiably delighted about being flown in to England for tonights important match involving Arsenal and Liverpool at the Emirates. He said: “Winning the competition is really a dream come true.
It hasn’t yet sunk in that I’ll be travelling to the Emirates Stadium - the home of the Gunners - to watch the team play live. I’ve always supported Arsenal and will continue doing so until the end of time. I haven’t missed a single game of the team on TV for years. Thirty eight games a season is just not enough!”
One of the judges, Bryan Robson, was delighted for Aby, and said: “We were over-whelmed at seeing the response from the contest. I would like to congratulate Aby, who obviously adores Arsenal Football Club. It was a tough decision to choose only one winner from the thousands of entries we received but Aby came across as the most passionate of all”
Even Arsene Wenger welcomed Aby to the Emirates, and was happy that an Arsenal supporter was crowned as the best football fan in India. He said: “We are proud to have so many fans all over the world supporting Arsenal Football Club. We are delighted that Aby has won this special prize and we are truly grateful for his support towards Arsenal from so far away.
We hope that Aby has a memorable trip to Emirates Stadium.”
It is amazing to learn of the fact that Barclays Premier League matches (380 a season) are beamed to in excess of 500 million homes all over the planet, however this game is maybe one of the most important for this season.
Arsenal and Liverpool are presently third and fourth in the Premiership, therefore the winner will secure a foothold in the competition for the Champions League places at the end of the season. While Arsenal are still contenders to win the championship, they can not afford to drop any more points after winning only one from their most recent 3 league matches, whilst Liverpool have only just managed to regain a top four place subsequent to a disastrous start to the season. Even if Liverpool won the big Merseyside derby at the weekend, they haven’t won at the Emirates for ten years, so they have a very big disadvantage to overcome to triumph tonight.
