Maximize the Benefits of Pinhole Eyeglasses

Pinhole glasses are quite different from other types of corrective eye wear. Getting its scientific name, stenopeic glasses, Greek for "little opening," they have no glass lens. Instead, they are made of a light plastic which has been perforated with numerous small holes. In fact, they are quite similar to a device know as a pinhole occluder, which is used by ophthalmologists to test visual acuity.
Pinhole eyeglasses come in various styles, they usually fall into two basic categories. While some resemble the more up to date, sleek shape some have the large, more round old fashioned one. And for those who already have a favorite pair of glasses that fit just right, you can often have your frames fitted with the special lens, saving the purchase of new frames.
They function by changing the way light enters the eye. Typically, the eyes use light to form an image by light entering the cornea, which is curved allowing the light to pass into the pupil in a concentrated beam from different angles. The pupil will then regulate and pass the beam into the lens, which focuses it onto the retina. From there it is transmitted to the optic nerve, which in turns sends it on to the brain.
However, the equally spaced holes, approx 1mm - 1.5mm in diameter, of pinhole glasses reduce the angles of light, allowing only direct, narrow rays to reach the cornea. By eliminating the extreme angles and narrowing the entrance of light into the eye, reducing distortion and creating better definition and clarity of the image.
Despite the effectiveness of pinhole eyeglasses, there are a few things to keep in mind about their use. They can affect your peripheral vision, so they should not be used when driving or moving around. Due to the reduction of light entering the eye, dim environments can seem abnormally dark. Also it is important to ensure they have some sort of harmful UV protection or you should avoid looking directly at the sun while wearing them.
Keeping those factors in mind you can enjoy the many benefits of wearing pinhole eyeglasses.
