I was quite nervous as I arrived at the bar where we had all planned to meet. I had many negative thoughts running through my brain, will I get served as I am only sixteen? Will I be able to speak fluently when talking to my friends and when ordering drinks from the bar? Will people mock my stutter? Why am I here?
The next few hours went quite well, to my surprise. I did struggle to speak at times but this had been expected, I had however been quite fortunate as I had not been up to the bar thus far.
People then started to talk about moving on to a nightclub. I had never been to a nightclub and really did not want to go but of course under the peer pressure decided to go.
There were two doormen who were checking people as they were entering the club. How old are you chap, said one of these men to me? I attempted to say eighteen but no words would come out, I tried again and again but it was like my voice had disappeared. The doormen and my so called friends could not stop laughing, I wanted to die there and then.
I am now thirty-three years of age and have been fluent for the last eleven years. I still look back and cringe at what life used to be like with that horrible speech impediment.
