Let me narrate to you how crazy people are about Nike Dunks. My friend Ted is a New York University grad and has a decent job in a reputed NY based PR firm. This is enough to give you a picture of his earnings and his lifestyle. But the guy beats every imagination when you see how crazy he is about sneakers and how much he spends on collecting them.
Ted, much like the sneaker obsessed zombies, stands in the line through the night before special editions of Nike Dunks are released outside shoe stores, waiting till morning when they open. His craze is not limited to Nike Dunks alone, like all sneaker junkies he is mad after any rarest, coolest sneaker on sale. If you put together all his collection, it may very easily run up to about half of his annual salary.
Ted is not alone; when the Nike Dunk SB and later Pigeon were released, he found himself standing at the end of the queue after about 70 others like him in front of a NY store. I really have no clue as to why people collect so many expensive sneakers even when they are not going to wear them to a basketball match. It is amazing how unabashed and obsessed they are with their objects of desire. Ted once told me of a guy he knows, that guy, Ted says, owns over 300 pairs of Nike Dunks amongst others!!
You need to take a peek into message boards dedicated to Nike Dunks where sneaker-heads frequent to discuss and find out when the next release is going to be. Sometimes I get the urge to liken this craze to stamp collection but not after seeing how Ted gets up in the wee hours to drive some 50 odd miles to stand in line in front of a skate store. He doesn’t believe in sitting in his car waiting for the store to open, he says, people recognize who is buying first and who is next! Wow!
Okay, how big is the craze? For sneaker heads like Ted, spending $500 on a pair of sneakers is a matter of pride and particularly when it is Nike Dunk SB, like Pigeon, Pro Zoo York, he doesn’t even bother how he is going to push the rest of the month when paying off up to $1200 for a pair.
It is not that they don’t know their actual prices, for example the suggested price of Nike Dunks Paris is $159 and it is $65 for most other models. Nike, on its part, is playing the ball very skillfully by releasing very limited number of each model so that each store gets not more than 20-30 pairs. The intention is obviously not to push up the price but to keep the craze intact. As if it was not enough, some times special editions are not released in every city which creates a big unrest amongst the Nike Dunks junkies. If craze and madness is what drives the market for Nike Dunks, it is the sneakers that drive the collectors mad in turn. Because it is this that you would die to wear.
