Port-Au-Prince, Haiti and the Physical
and Psychological Effects of Stress
February 2010 - It has been about six weeks since a devastating 7.0 earthquake hit the poorest country in the western hemisphere, Haiti. The capital, Port-Au-Prince, was especially hard hit. Most of the capital was destroyed and over 200,000 people were killed. There is talk of moving the capital to Belize City because of the devastation.
On February 22, a strong aftershock struck Port-Au-Prince terrifying an already frightened population. Most sleep outside because of fear of further aftershocks.
Power has been restored to only about half of Port-Au-Prince. Most is in the southern part in the hills overlooking darkened tent cities. This is only a small part of the physical problems that Haitians are dealing with.
Only about 270,000 people have been supplied with tents with another 1.2 million still doing without. Although food, water and medical supplies are more available, the overall need still has not been met.
There still are physical and psychological effects of stress that the Haitian people will deal with for years. Not only have many people lost every material thing they had, in some cases, they have lost all their families as well.
One man was still suffering from knowing that his brother and nine other family members are still buried in the rubble. An older woman lost all of her children except one. Then there is the heartbreaking picture of the stricken man holding his young daughter who appears asleep, but who is dead and wrapped in a bloody sheet. There are thousands suffering physical and psychological effects of stress. This could also include nightmares, depression and post traumatic stress disorder. Others already deal with the stress of amputations because of injuries.
"We must not forget Haiti," said Karen C. Groves, CEO of Crane's Nest Enterprises, "because they need help to rebuild their buildings, city and, most importantly, their lives for years to come." The physical and psychological effects of stress may never go away.
So please give to reputable agencies, remember them in your prayers and do what you can for the nation of Haiti and its people.
