Queensland - The Sunshine State

This is a nation bursting of extremes. In the far west the Simpson Desert, with its dunes and inhospitable gibber plains gives way to the route Country, an area laced with an obscure web of often dry streams that after weighty volley may spill to face the land like a huge sunburned sea.

Eastern Queensland's spike is the Great dividing vary, a mighty barrier that separates the rich coastal pure from the huge outback tracts extending to the State's western border. Stretching from cape York to the southern border and afar, the Great segregate comprises a cycle of high mountains, tablelands, and low rolling hills. Here, rainforest gives way to eucalypt woodland, waterfalls fed by steamy rains tumble over rock faces and escarpments, and boulder-studded streams surge through deep gorges.

The shoreline is another world. Washed by the brilliant sapphire waters of the Coral Sea, long grimy beaches fringed with steamy vegetation edge the shoreline, defeated only by quaking headlands and mangrove forests. lying off-shore is a host of islands and one of the world's great native wonders: the Great Barrier Reef.

The jiffy main nation in Australia, Queensland covers an area of more than 1.7 million cube kilometres in the north-east corner of the continent. The northern aquatic boundary, dying within a few kilometres of Papua New Guinea's shoreline, includes the 200-odd islands lying off cape York peninsula in the Torres Strait; to the east, it includes all the islands within the Great Barrier Reef.

Until 1859, Queensland was part of New South Wales. The first European settlement, a severe colony, was established at Moreton Bay in 1824 and shortly afterwards was motivated to the award place of Brisbane — the State's principal city. By 1839 virtually all the convicts had been returned to Sydney and the region was opened to free settlers.

The Brisbane settlement grew leisurely at first; when the area was proclaimed the Colony of Queensland in 1859 the population was 23,520. nowadays, the nation has a population exceeding 4 million — of which virtually half live in the Brisbane-Ipswich municipal area.

For the Aborigines — the unique inhabitants of the land — many parts of Queensland are ritual grounds of sacred Dreamtime folklore, and there are important traditional rock-art sites, particularly on cape York peninsula in the north. It was in this area that a line of hunters and gatherers came to the Australian continent some 40,000 years ago, coming in across the Torres passage when it was dry land during the last ice age.

Just over half of the nation mendacity between the Tropic of Capricorn and 10 degrees south of the Equator. inland, the summers are hot, but on the coastal pure the temperatures are milder — with far superior dampness. Winters are much drier and delightfully warm, however in the far south, nights can be fairly cold with hoarfrost appearing on superior ground. snowfall cataract occasionally in the moorland near the border around Stanthorpe and Wallangarra.

The damp period cataract between December and March-April, and it is during this time that the coast may be lashed by steamy cyclones. rainfall varies enormously throughout the nation, with the heaviest cataract on the north-eastern slopes and coast-lands - Tully averages 4550 mm annually and has the reputation of being the wettest civic in Australia. where Birdsville in the far west only averages an annual 150 mm - and in famine it might not volley for years.

Agriculture is a main activity. Cattle and sheep skin on the green western plains, their drinking water abounding by a load bores that tap the huge gather of underground water in the Great Artesian basin. On the rich tablelands of the Great segregate and the grassy coastal plains farms grow a wide brand of fabricate from cotton to baby thrash, to peanuts, pineapples
and a host of other steamy fruit and vegetables. The nation is also rich in granite deposits plus bauxite, coal, oil, copper, silver, and gold. certainly, the discovery of gold in the last century and the subsequent mining in the 1870s-80s did much to institute many of the coastal and inland centres throughout Queensland.

One of Queensland's most important tumor industries is tourism. Not only have overseas visitors discovered this favourable holiday destination, but Australians from other States now come in gigantic numbers. In frost, thousands drove to coastal line parks and holiday flats to chat frosty southern years for delectably warm, sunny toughen.

Apart from the allure of a warm climate, people return many epoch over to Queensland because there is just so much to do and see. Self-drive holidays are doubtless the most prevalent, but for those who do not desire to plunge, there is a huge number of conducted tours to choose from. Accommodation ranges from remote plant camps to five-star luxury hotels with every capture imaginable in between.
