I could have willingly spent a lot more time at the shooting range learning to shoot the hunting rifle, but the reality was I could not afford it with all the other projects I had going. The reality is the majority of shooting ranges are much too short to do much research on developing a first-rate hunting round. As soon as I did get into reloading and hunting, I found a number of big changes that happened very rapidly.

One of the greatest was the accuracy I learned to strive for, in order to load a great round. Having the set up to construct my own rounds ended up a lot cheaper. With reloading your own bullets, the principal thing that becomes evident is that once you have fired a round and the brass is form fit to your rifle chamber, the improvement in accuracy is huge. It did not take me long to begin to look for a longer range and added shots over two hundred yards.

I nonetheless was not hunting with a big bore or magnum rifle back then since the area I was in did not have much of a moose or elk population. It was by and large deer which is still a grand sport and a lot more fun to track than moose. It seems that deer hunting is more fun because they are smarter, move more and tend to be able to avoid people.. After I moved to a better moose hunting region in BC’s northwest I quickly learned the importance of the magnum caliber and the necessity for longer range shots.

Reloading bullets gave me this alternative and put me a few steps ahead of the rest of the guys that did not aim to go any further in their hunting knowledge. The population here is still small and the hunting area is huge. We even now have more big game than people, so the hunting is better. Back when I first moved here people used to state they didn’t hunt, they simply went out and shot their moose. That time is just about gone, and you need to work at it merely to get a shot at a moose most seasons. To get a better chance at the big ones, you need to shoot long range.
