Some songs are very romantic. Women swoon when they hear them. The lyrics speak of lasting love, beds of roses and being willing to die for love. And not all romantic songs are slow. Some of the greatest romantic songs of all time are face paced. And not all slow songs are romantic. But some people assume that if a song is slow and romantic sounding, then it must be, which isn’t always the case.
Hinder’s big hit Lips of an Angel is a prime example of a song that sounds romantic until you really listen to the lyrics. This is essentially a song about a guy who is whining about the fact that his ex girlfriend, whom he is not over, is tempting him to cheat. Boohoo. Then don’t cheat if the idea upsets you. It’s that simple. But throughout the whole song we hear how hard it is for him to hear her voice on the phone when she calls. Then get call display. Problem solved. He goes on and on about how he wishes his current girlfriend was the ex. Then dump your girlfriend and get back with your ex. Once again, problem solved.
Songs in which the singer is complaining about cheating or wanting to cheat tick me off. Don’t whine about how hard it is not to cheat. And don’t idealize the idea that the decision whether or not to cheat is even remotely romantic. If you are that hung up on your ex, then go back to her. Talking about the good ole’ days and saying she has the lips of an angel while your girl is in the next room isn’t romantic- it’s pathetic. And I would hope if the song went on for another verse or two, one of the women would kick his butt.
