Called L. Ron Hubbard's Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contest, the initiative is now in its 23rd year. This year's selected authors and illustrators are published in a book called "Writers of the Future, Volume 22."
Every quarter of a year, three writers and three illustrators are selected by a panel of leading authors and artists of science fiction and fantasy. Winners then take part in a weeklong, intensive mentoring workshop taught by contest judges. Past mentors have included such sci-fi greats as authors Anne McCaffrey, Orson Scott Card, Algis Budrys, Robert J. Sawyer, Tim Powers, Kevin J. Anderson and K.D. Wentworth and illustrators Ed Cartier, Frank Frazetta, Vincent Di Fate, Stephen Hickman, Ron Lindahn, Bob Eggleton and H.R. Van Dongen.
Winning authors and illustrators are published and win over $30,000 in cash prizes and royalties. They also embark on a series of radio and TV interviews. Think of it as an "American Idol" for young authors.
A popular contest gives science fiction writers and artists the chance to be published. The contest was initiated in 1983 by L. Ron Hubbard to help science fiction writers and illustrators succeed.
