Sebaceous hyperplasia is the term used for enlarged sebaceous glands seen on the forehead or cheeks of the middle-aged and elderly. Sebaceous hyperplasia appears as small yellow bumps up to 3 mm in diameter. Sebaceous hyperplasia generally affects middle-aged to elderly adults. The symptoms of this condition are 1-5 mm papules on the skin, mainly on the forehead, nose and cheeks, and sebarrhoeic facial skin. The papules may be cauliflower-shaped. Acne is also a symptom of this glandular disorder. It differs from the type of acne that affects adolescents and young adults, in that it is more of an abnormally discolored patch that is not cured by topical treatments alone. There is an age group that does seem to be more vulnerable to Sebaceous Hyperplasia then any other age group.
Causes:
* The cause is unknown.
* These problems tend to run in families.
* Neither sebaceous hyperplasia or Fordyce’s condition is contagious.
Sign and symptoms
* Acne.
* Enlargement of the sebaceous gland.
* Yellowish white raised papules.
* Dryness, of the hairs.
Sebaceous Hyperplasia Treatment
Treatment of sebaceous hyperplasia is not required but may be desired for cosmesis. Options include electrodesiccation, topical chemicals (bichloracetic acid), excision, cryotherapy, and carbon dioxide laser therapy. This patient did not want treatment. When they are small they may clear in a single treatment. The larger ones could take 2-3 treatments, spaced about a month apart. The side effect of the treatment is localized redness and swelling that may last up to 10 days. Over this period of time the lesions will slowly shrink away and become less noticeable.
