Here are some questions to ask yourself before starting down the road to owning a home based business. Answer them honestly so youll have a better idea if this is a road to travel down. 1. Are you a person who enjoys making decisions? Are you naturally a leader? These are traits that anyone thinking about starting a home based business must have. You will have to make some hard decisions as a business owner, so these are important personality traits to either already possess or work toward developing.2. What is the most important quality for business owner, particularly a home based business owner, to have? Some people may think that being organized or having a desire to make money are the most important qualities. Being able to take the initiative and follow through are much more important.3. Do you already have a good amount of money saved for start-up expenses? There are people who have been able to start a business with little more than a weeks paycheck, but they are very rare. Most financial experts recommend a new business have a minimum of $25,000 in savings so they are contributing financially if they seek outside funding of any kind.4. Do you handle change well? How flexible are you? Flexibility and adapting to change are more traits that are important for a home based business owner. These traits will serve you well when you have plans and they change due to a problem or a client needing something quickly.5. How are you at planning? If you cant make short-range goals and meet them, how will you expect to make long-range goals and actually succeed? Poor management is one of the problems that cause new home based businesses to fail.6. Do you follow through with the plans you make? Can you complete projects within the timeframe they are needed? Or do you have a bad habit of procrastinating? If youre unable to make plans and follow through with them, starting a business would not be a good idea for you. Persistence is a definite prerequisite to success.7. Are you a risk-taker? There is a huge risk inherent in starting a business. If taking risks makes you uneasy, you may not be a candidate for this venture. Of course, you dont want to take a risk just for the thrill of it with business; you want to be able to calculate the risk and for them to be acceptable.Starting a new home based business is on a lot of peoples minds these days.
