Sony Ericsson W580i

The Sony Ericsson W580i is a slider style candy bar phone designed to make just about any consumer happy. It features an attractive design in a number of different colors, enough functions to appeal to even the most disproving tech fanatics, and an interface that is easy enough for people from all walks of life to get a hang of. In other words, the Sony Ericsson W580i is a device that easily bridges the gap between all kinds of cell phone customers - and is not aimed just at one category of users.

Announced in March of 2007, the Sony Ericsson W580i is a quad band GSM device. This means that it can be used anywhere in the world simply by swapping out the phone’s SIM card when you arrive at your destination. Unfortunately, despite this global roaming capability, the Sony Ericsson W580i is limited to the much slower GPRS/EDGE network instead of the faster 3G networks for data transfer.

Measuring approximately four inches by two inches by a half of an inch, the Sony Ericsson W580i is a relatively small device. It also weighs around 94 grams, making it fairly lightweight as well.

Amazingly enough, for such a small and light device, the Sony Ericsson W580i has an impressive battery life. Expect to get approximately nine hours of talk time or 370 hours of standby time on a single charge. While these numbers are practically unheard of for most phones, they are par for the course for Sony Ericsson devices.

The main screen is average in both size and quality. It measures in at two inches in size, features a resolution of 240 by 320 pixels, and a color depth of 262k colors.

The Sony Ericsson W580i also features a built in digital camera that supports two megapixels of resolution, video recording functions, and a four times digital zoom.

Multimedia is very well supported on the Sony Ericsson W580i, given its Walkman designation. The video player supports a number of popular formats and the audio player supports all of the most popular formats. Furthermore, the Sony Ericsson W580i also supports FM radio. Memory can be expanded from the built-in 12MB with a Memory Stick Micro (M2).

Other features include a full HTML browser with RSS support, Bluetooth 2.0 support, a large phone book, an alarm, a calendar, a notepad, a calculator, a stopwatch, a to-do list, a number of voice commands, a voice recorder, a speakerphone, and email support.

Pros

* Lots of great features for traditional consumers
* Attractive design
* Great battery life

Cons

* No 3G support
* Small keys

Overall

The Sony Ericsson W580i is a fantastic device that is designed to suit the needs of more than just the average consumer. If you can live without the support for the 3G data transfer speeds, the Sony Ericsson W580i is well worth the cost of admission. All in all, this is a great phone for the average consumer and should definitely be on your list of devices to check out at the store.
