Before the first World Equestrian Games in 1990, the World Champion of each equestrian event was decided at a separate competition. The location of the event was decided based on the country of origin of the previous World Champion. In 1983, this all began to change. This was the year that the World Equestrian Games were proposed as a way for the FEI to determine the World Champion of each equestrian event at a single time and place. This proposal came to life in 1990, as the first World Equestrian Games were held in Stockholm Sweden.
For some, this event is more exciting than the Olympics. For sixteen days, approximately 800 competitors representing 57 countries come together in a single place to determine who will take home the honor of World Champion. Now, the FEI determines the World Champion of dressage, driving, endurance, eventing, jumping, reigning, vaulting once every four years. The 2010 games will mark the first games in which an eighth event is held. This year, para dressage will be added to the line up.
For American equestrians and enthusiasts, The World Equestrian Games 2010 marks another exciting event in the history of the games. This year makes the first time that the Games will be leaving the European continent. Since the first games, the event has been held in Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and Germany. Now, two decades later, the World Equestrian Games are coming to Lexington Kentucky. The Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington has not seen a World Championship since 1978, when it hosted the Championship for Eventing following the win by American competitor Bruce Davidson. The famous Kentucky Horse Park is the perfect venue for the World Equestrian Games 2010. The park can currently house over 1,000 horses. The outdoor stadium at the Kentucky Horse Park can hold approximately 30,000 spectators, and then venue completed construction on a large indoor stadium in 2009.
