Before the Internet was invented, worldwide communication was limited. There was the telephone, but if you called other countries regularly you could end up with a monthly bill of hundreds of pounds or more. In addition, the telephone is not an effective marketing tool when you are trying to initiate business advertising. So, unless you could spend thousands on television or magazine ads, you were pretty much limited to local networking.
Now, things have changed. With Internet technologies today, you can communicate with thousands of people all over the world without having to pay a penny. For businesses this means an unlimited source of advertising.
In fact, there is actually a method of e-marketing where businesses can receive exposure without having to pay for keywords or SEO specialists. Known as “bum marketing” this method of advertising involves a marketer writing articles and submitting them to directories. Over time Google ranks these articles according to the keywords contained within them. In turn, the article receives tons of visitors; visitors who end up going to the original authors site.
This method alone can result in thousands of hits every month. No other form of offline marketing can match these results without forcing business owners to pay enormous fees. At most, bum marketing only requires a time investment, something that is easier to cope with when you are a small business.
There is also another advantage offered by the ease of communication on the Internet. For regular, everyday people, the Internet has revolutionized social entertainment. For example, say a person from England has an online friend in South America. Calling them would be too expensive, yet thanks to Instant Messaging, they can still have a real-time conversation. And now thanks to VOIP technology, a microphone or telephone can be used during an IM session. So instead of communicating via writing, you can communicate with speech.
If your online friend is not on at the same time as you, there is the option of emailing them. This is a bit like sending a letter, except delivery is instantaneous. As soon as you press “Send” your email will be placed into their inbox. You will receive a response back whenever they get around to giving one, (which can be a few minutes, depending on their typing and writing abilities).
For Internet users who prefer networking on a bigger scale, there’s social networking and blogging. With social networking you communicate with people through their profiles, while blogging allows you to share your personal thoughts with the world. If readers want to talk about what you just said, they can post their thoughts at the end of your blog.
The Internet is also very helpful for researching information. At the press of a button, you will receive thousands of articles about whatever topic you need. In the past people would have to go to the library to get this type of information. And even then, it was impossible to browe everything. But with the way search engines work, you can preview articles before you even visit them. This will help you decide if they are even worth your time.
In conclusion, the Internet has performed wonders in the world of communication. It allows us to connect with our neighbors in a way that no one could have imagined. Whether you are a business in need of e-marketing, a lonely soul in need of a friend, or a college student conducting research for a paper, the Internet can help you. All you need is an ISP and a computer!
