The International Federation of the Phonographic Music, IFPI, has just presented the results of the online music sales in 2008, which increased by 25%. This represents a turnover of 3,700 million dollars, 2,800 million euros, compared to 3,000 million dollars generated by music downloads in the previous year.
These figures show that online music and represents 20% of the business of the industry, compared to 15% in 2007. The growth has been spectacular in 2008 but has slowed somewhat from the previous year when sales had soared by 30%.
The slowdown could have been greater given the international financial environment, but none of these figures seem satisfied that the IFPI remains unsatisfied because music online payment remains a niche with respect to discharges between individuals, which the association describes as illegal.
The report said that 95% of the downloads were made in 2008 were illegal or not paid, and what is worse, that the increase in selling music online is not able to balance their performance as overall sales music have fallen by 7%, according to their forecasts.
In 2007, turnover of the music had also fallen by 8%.
IFPI stressed that the industry is seeking ways to reinvent the approach to Internet access providers that are deploying new services for music, especially the mobile industry with agreements with operators but also with companies like Nokia and others as MySpace, which are launching their own virtual stores.
