The gown comes from the cappa clausa, which is a long black cape. The gowns consist of mostly black color and are primarily the same throughout the English speaking areas. The gown may be died in one of the colors of the university, which presents the robe. There is another type of gown known as the lay type gown. The BA gown consists of bell shaped sleeves and the MA gown has long sleeves closed at the end. The nuances for the academic wear might change from one university to the other but the basic structural similarity is always present. Academic wear is not restricted to the academic institutions but also to the church and the parish where people are generally seen in robes and long gowns. The color combination for the priests and other members of the church are more white than black. Then there is also the doctor’s gown, which is better known as the undress gown. This is usually black trimmed with lace, braid and are worn for less formal occasions like the lectures. On some special days people are supposed to wear these dresses. There is the hood and the cap too which forms an integral part of the academic wear for any kind of academic robe worn. The British and the American ways of an academic dress or wear are different. While the British way of dressing is more traditional, the American academic gowns, hoods and caps are designed in a different manner. There are colleges where people are supposed to wear the university sanctioned academic wear and most of these colleges are wither European descendants or highly Europe influenced. The gowns are specially designed to incorporate the number of stars that one student can possibly get in the particular university.
United states have standardized the use o colors for different fields and these colors are used for the gowns, caps or hoods in the academic wear.The material for the academic dress is highly influenced by the climate of the region where it will be wore and there are no strict rules that one has to follow.
