Often, seniors have difficult walking for extended periods of time. It can sometimes be simply too tiresome to do, but frequently diseases like arthritis actually make walking difficult and cumbersome. Not being able to walk for extended periods of time can make many day to day activities much more difficult or even impossible, which is why many people use mobility scooters.
Mobility scooters are often simply referred to as electric scooters and can be used to carry a person around the house, mall, or even across outdoor un-paved terrain. Of course, for outdoor use, some models are better than others.
The service they provide is kind or similar to that of a wheelchair, but the individual using it is positioned in a slightly different manner. The base of an electric scooter is usually more rectangle or oval shaped than a wheelchair is and the seat is positioned towards the rear of the base. On the front of the base, a set of handle bars extends, so that the device can easily be controlled. The handlebars not only control the direction of the scooter, but also the acceleration and in some cases, the lights, horn, and other special features. It is also almost always adjustable, as is the seat, so it can be used by people with different body sizes.
The number of wheels a scooter has is one way to classify them. A three wheeled scooter has two wheels in back and one wheel in front. These types of scooters are more maneuverable and also lighter in weight, but they are also a little bit less stable. This makes them great for the indoors, because they are so maneuverable, but not so great for the outdoors. Travel scooters, which are a special type of super lightweight scooter, are usually three wheeled.
Instead for the outdoors, a four wheeled scooter is usually the best choice. It can support more weight and because the weight of the rider is spread out more evenly, it provides a much more stable platform. However, it has a larger turning radius, which makes it not as good of a choice for places with very tight corners. Due to its improved stability, most heavy duty scooters utilize a four wheeled design.
If you don't have a travel scooter, then you will likely need a wheelchair lift for your vehicle. Even though they are used for scooters, these devices are usually called wheelchair lifts and can attach to the hitch on a car or be mounted internally. Even though they are often listed as wheelchair lifts, make certain that it specifically says it will work with a mobility scooter, because some will in fact only work with wheelchairs.
People of all ages use mobility scooters, but seniors are the most common age group to use these devices.
Mobility scooters are one type of mobility aid that has been used for many years. They are similar to electric wheelchairs and often require a wheelchair lift to transport.
