Voyages Indochine - A Unique Kingdom in Southeast Asia (Indochina)

Cambodia is 181,035 sq km (sixty nine,898 sq. miles), around half the size of Vietnam. It's slightly wider than it is long and is bordered by Thailand to the west and northwest, Laos in the north, Vietnam within the east and the Gulf of Thailand within the south. It shares most territory with Vietnam with a standard border stretching 1228 kms.

It is a reasonably low lying land with rolling plains and three quarters of the country - the Tonal Sap Basin and the Mekong Lowlands - is but a hundred m on top of ocean level. Its highest point is Phnom Aural, at one,771m, in southwestern Cambodia, within the richly biodiversity Cardamom Mountains, home to Southeast Asia's second largest virgin forests.

The Nice Lake Tonal Sap

The 2 most prominent options of Cambodia are Tonal Sap, the most important freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, and also the Mekong River which rises from Tibet and flows into Cambodia from Laos. The mighty Mekong, some 5kms in width in stretches, travels 500 km from north to south and splits into 3 at Phnom Penh becoming the Tonal Sap River, the Mekong and also the Basses. The lives of the Cambodians are very a lot of influenced by these 2 topographical features and therefore the wealthy sediment deposited throughout the monsoons makes central Cambodia incredibly fertile.

Remote Mountains and Beaches

In the northeastern corner of the country in areas bordering Vietnam are the Western Highlands that are remote and rugged. The Rattanakosin province here is home to several hill tribes and is obtaining widespread as a hot tourist destination. Within the Northern border with Thailand are the Danker Mountains. All these mountainous forests are a made supply for timber and deforestation is beginning to be a problem.

On Cambodia's 435km coastline are islands and untouched beaches and therefore the Khon Kong Conservation Corridor, that encompasses several spectacular natural sites like mangrove forests, waterfalls, a wildlife sanctuary and coastal habitats.
