What are the true facts about running your car on water?

Some of the most popular internet download packages at the moment are “run your car on water” info packs and there are a growing number on “internet water fuel experts”. So what are the true facts?

Obviously energy IN is equal to energy OUT, so the energy obtained from burning the hydrogen/oxygen mix is equal to the energy supplied by the engine to the hydrolysis system that produces the gas. You can recycle excess energy such as when ticking over, coasting or when the engine is running at its most efficient. That surely can’t amount to more than 20% without adding some sort of regenerative braking system that feeds energy into the electrical system.

Some “water for gas” product descriptions claim that the engine is only 15% efficient and that somehow you can tap into the 85%. The 15% efficiency is a fact of the reciprocating internal combustion engine whether it’s burning gasoline or hydrogen. It’s not something that can be tapped into by using a different fuel. If you run your car for one hour, on any fuel, doing nothing but supplying power to your hydrolysis system, you will produce enough gas to run your car for 9 minutes.

Assuming that you could recycle 20% of your produced energy into hydrolysis without impacting fuel consumption or performance, by my calculations, the amount of “free” energy would be 15% x 20% = 3%. Three percent is a reasonable fuel saving but it’s hardly “double your mileage” as some marketeers are suggesting.

I’d like to think I was wrong and there is a future in the technology so please, Internet Fuel Experts and Physics Graduates, what are your calculations?
