What is the Procedure to Extract Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are among the most hard to remove teeth as they are multi rooted teeth, the upper wisdom teeth have three roots and the lower have two roots. The wisdom teeth are among the molars group of teeth and they appear at the age of between 17 and 21.

Before the removal of the wisdom teeth, the dentist will usually give you some medication during the day of the removal; this medicine is basically to relax you since you may be tensed before the removal.

After you go to the dentist procedure room, the dentist’s assistant will usually take your blood pressure and or pulse, the dentist’s assistant is usually there to answer any question that you have and also to determine if you are ready to go through the procedure. After the assistant has confirmed that you are ready for the process you will be numbed by either qualified assistants or the dentist through the administration of anesthetic, in most cases deadening agents (local anesthesia) are injected onto various spots. Nitrous oxide (general anesthesia) can also be used; this is to put one to sleep during the procedure. You can discuss with your dentist on what you prefer to be used during the numbing process.

The dentist will usually delay the removal of the tooth if you have infections such as pericoronitis, if you have been diagnosed with the infection, the dentist will usually prescribe antibiotic for seven days.

After you have been numbed or you are asleep, the dentist will then reach for the wisdom tooth; if the tooth is well developed then it will be much easier for the dentist to pull it out. However some teeth are not yet well developed that a special drill will have to be used to get to the hidden tooth. The drill cuts through the gums to get to the teeth. In difficult situations the dentist will opt to remove some part of your jaw bone to get to the tooth. The way the tooth’s root is aligned will determine how much time it will take to remove it. After the dentist is through with the removal of the tooth, he will stitch up the area or just gauze it up. It takes a few minutes to remove the wisdom teeth but some cases of up to 40 minutes have been reported.

When the procedure is done with, the dentist will usually give you cleaning solutions and pain killers as the process of healing takes a much longer time. The cleaning solution is basically to stop the wound from being infected by bacteria in the mouth. You may also be given a follow up date. If you are a smoker you will be asked to stop since it will affect the healing process.

Since general anesthesia or sedatives have been known to affect reasoning and coordination, it is usually advised by dentists that you have someone to drive you home after the procedure.
