There are so many types of proxy server software out there that even the most seasoned user will have a hard time in deciding which ones to download. Since trying them all is out of the question, how does one choose the best one for the job?
The most efficient way would be to compare the features of the product. You can go to a website that reviews these types of applications. Not only will you get the essential features and traits in each one, but you will also become aware of known issues, compatibility problems etc. However, you need not always pick the ones that the site chooses. You also have to exercise your own judgment in some cases.
The right proxy server software will be dependent on just exactly what you wnat. For this reason, the first thing that you need to look at will be the system specs. If you are running Windows for example, look for one that is compatible with the one you are using (i.e., it is not enough when it says it supports Windows; it must mention what types, be it Vista, XP, ME, 2000 etc).
The other thing that you will want to focus on will be the type of connection that it can adapt to. This is particularly important if you are running a network. Does it support LAN? Does it give you the option to construct your own proxy? What about support for dial up, broadband, DSL, etc? A proxy server software will be able to support some or all of these.
The other functions that you might look for are its management control capabilities. Some have controls that allow you to perform filtering / blocking of sites, allocating bandwidth use etc. Some are even capable of performing services like mail, http, do ftp services, and also give you telnet access.
For managers and those overseeing corporate networks, they should look for one with the ability to monitor Web use and also keep track of bandwidth utilization by employees. You might also want to check support for SOCKS, web verification, DNS features and other vital features. Checking your network requirements will be very helpful.
The type of proxy server software you need will be based on your requirements. The needs of a network manager and a casual user are different so evaluate your position. By getting the proper application, you can avoid problems.
