Pinhole glasses, also known as stenopeic glasses, are an alternative to conventional glasses that can be used for many activities that do not require a large amount of movement. Such activities include but are by no means limited to reading, writing, watching TV, sitting in a classroom, and working at a computer.
Pinhole glasses do not come in various "prescription strengths" like traditional glasses. Because of this, someone who requires one pair of glasses while reading or writing and another pair while watching a movie or a play would only need one pair of pinhole glasses for both activities. The use of pinhole glasses with the intention of improving vision predates the usage of modern glasses.
Pinhole eyeglasses are shaped like conventional glasses but instead of having clear glass or plastic lenses that allow the majority of direct and indirect light to enter the eye, they have mostly opaque metal or plastic lenses with several tiny pinholes that allow light to pass through and into the eye. They operate very much like cameras with small apertures. The multiple holes in the glasses allow small, focused amounts of light to enter into the eye. As a result, depth of field is increased just as it is in a camera that has a small aperture. What this means in practical terms is that more things appear to be in focus at one time. For some people, this can lead to overall clearer vision.
Of course, with the reduced amount of light entering the eye also comes reduced brightness. The majority of the lens surface of a pair of pinhole glasses does not allow light to pass through it. This means that although vision may have increased sharpness, brightness can suffer noticeably in some situations. The use of pinhole glasses also decreases the peripheral vision. This is because the light that is allowed to pass through the lenses is direct light, so it excludes much of the light, and therefore much of the image, coming from the sides. For these reasons, it is generally recommended that a person should not wear pinhole glasses while driving or while operating heavy machinery.
Mike has been writing and publishing articles about health products. He recently came across a website on pinhole glasses which gave information about this old technique of using pinhole glasses for eyesight correction. Here's an article about pinhole glasses.
